PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

There are many ways to volunteer in the community, from donating hours at a shelter to chairing fundraisers, and everything in-between. However, does the idea of tapping into your OD skill set to make unique volunteer contributions appeal to you? If so, come and learn about the role of OD in The United Way (UW) funds allocation process and beyond. In addition, hear from STL-ODN members about their experiences serving on UW allocations panels.

Last year, STL-ODN launched a partnership with UW and agreed that partnering with UW would provide an opportunity to execute in the following areas of the ODN strategy:

  • Increase the visibility and impact of OD
  • Raise the profile of OD in our community by connecting with academia, nonprofits and businesses.
  • Through our engagements in the community enable people to see, experience and appreciate the value that OD offers.

To that end, five ODN members served on United Way panels in 2013 weigh in on the value of a continuing partnership.

During this interactive session, STL-ODN members will participate in an allocations simulation that represents how United Way volunteers use their OD skills to drive funding decisions. STL-ODN members will be asked to discuss this exercise as well as to reflect on ways to leverage their skills for personal volunteer commitments. Similarly, the exercise is meant to help stimulate thought about extending our volunteer experiences into our paid work. Some meaningful, high impact volunteer opportunities not only reinforce on-the-job OD skills but can also serve as powerful resume boosters.
