PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The successes of organizations that effectively execute strategy provide lessons in Organization Development (OD) and leadership development.  To execute strategy, an organization must have both consensus and commitment from top leadership.  For this reason, the process of formulating and executing a strategy can be seen as a real-time strategic OD intervention.

Mario A. Bognanno, Managing Director at Balanced Strategy Group, will lead a discussion of the OD-related implications of strategy formulation and execution within the context of three case studies:

  • A global plastics company's industry was experiencing the smallest profit margins on record. This market pressure resulted in the merging of two formerly competitive businesses into a new joint venture where economies of scale, proprietary technologies and process efficiencies could be shared. The strategy needed to address the merger of two different business cultures representing a dozen different nationalities.
  • The Economic Development Agency (EDA), a federal government agency, who embarked on a comprehensive plan to transform the organization by focusing on changing its role from "a provider of grants" toward that of "an investor in regional development projects".
  • A financial services firm who began as a "domestic mutual company" and transitioned to a "global public company" by focusing on serving the small and medium businesses, providing large company sophistication and services to the small and medium business market and taking a long-term view of client partnerships.

To prepare for our discussion, consider:

  • How can OD improve an organization's capacity to manage its strategy, including its resources, processes and people?
  • What OD-related implications of strategy formulation and execution have you observed in your professional experience?
