PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Successful Leadership Transitions: How a Learning & Development Function in a Global Company Created Relevance through a Structured, Disciplined Approach to Leadership Transitions

Presenter: Terrance Donahue

Leadership transitions can be times of great promise and potential. Done well, they build momentum that can propel the new leader and their team to new and higher levels.  However, leadership transitions can also be times of great pressure and peril.  Done poorly, the transitioning leader can quickly get into a downward spiral that is hard to pull out of.

This session will enable you to:

  • Determine a structured approach to driving business results through supported leadership transitions.
  • Identify the factors that create virtuous and vicious cycles in a leadership transition
  • Diagnose the business situation(s) a transitioning leader faces in their new role

Terrence Donahue, Corporate Director of Learning at Emerson Electric will lead an interactive session highlighting the business case he made to introduce a new strategic workshop for Emerson’s transitioning leaders around the world called Successful Leadership Transitions: Taking Charge in Your New Leadership Role.  Emerson co-developed this workshop with Dr. Michael Watkins, author of the international best-seller The First 90 Days.  Dr. Watkins is professor of Leadership and Change at the prestigious International School of Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland and a former faculty member at the Harvard Business School.

The Successful Leadership Transitions program at Emerson is not merely a workshop--it is an operating system for how leaders approach their new leadership role in a planned, systematic manner. The program is now part of Emerson’s global leadership portfolio and available to every transitioning leader at Emerson from Director-level through Business Unit President.
