Putting the "O" Back in OD: Focus on Strategy and Sustainability
In Bradford & Burke's (2005), “Reinventing Organization Development,” the authors call for greater emphasis on the "O" in organization development. This entails differentiating between "using OD practices" and "being OD." “Being OD” requires OD efforts to be planful, tied to strategy, organization-wide, and led from the top.
The 2011 STL-ODN Conference will focus on how this mindset can help OD professionals more effectively drive organizational strategy and sustainability. This year's conference features a variety of presenters who will highlight different approaches to and applications of the conference theme.
Dr. Allan Cohen, noted author and Edward R. Madden Professor of Management at Babson College, will present on "Putting the 'O' Back in OD," with a special focus on how OD professionals can leverage their organizational influence. Michael Goodman, internationally-renowned systems thinking expert and Principal at Innovation Associates, will overview concepts of applied systems thinking and give attendees an opportunity to apply them to organizational issues.
Three local practitioners will present case studies that demonstrate the conference theme: Dipankar Bandyopadhyay (Global Talent Management Lead: Commercial, Monsanto), presenting on talent management; Dr. Jami Wolfe (Consultant, CMA), presenting on leadership development; and Gene Perry, (HR Director, Bunzl), presenting an acquisition toolkit.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to experience one of three concurrent "encore sessions," which will build on some of our most popular 2010 STL-ODN monthly programs: Dr. Kathryn Cramer (Managing Partner, Cramer Institute), presenting on leading change; Dr. Gina Hinrichs (VP Operations, Strengthsnet), presenting on strategic implementation; and Warren Winer and Emmett Seaborn (Consultants, Towers Watson), presenting on employee engagement.
Joined by COCA artists, Matt Homann (Executive Director, COCAbiz) will demonstrate fun and creative facilitation methods that OD practitioners can use in their work.
