In 2009, researchers Rubin & Dierdorff stated “business schools are out of touch with the real world.”  In 2006, the Graduate Management Admissions Council stated “MBA programs can enhance their relevancy by devoting more attention to people-focused competencies – leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.”As OD practitioners, we might state similar dilemmas in leadership development and can learn from how graduate schools are approaching this leadership dilemma.

In our January 2011 program Developing Managers Who Can Lead, Lee Konczak, Ph.D. of Olin School of Business of Washington University, will review what MBA programs are doing along the lines of leadership development and specifically about the integrated leadership approach developed at Olin.

To open the program, Lee will case study the Olin model including: the approach to developing management and leadership competencies, the guiding principles of management/leadership  development, program/curriculum re-design, role of assessment and self-assessment, and the lessons learned.

After reviewing the Olin model, Lee will lead the attendees in a two-way exchange and  group -centered dialogue on where the field of leadership development is going.  The focus will be on the strategic and tactical implications and best practices and gathering the wisdom in the room.  The process will combine table discussions on questions Lee will pose with interactive group dialogue.

NOTE:  After the monthly program, attendees are emailed an electronic copy of the presentation materials.
